I am getting ready to purchase a new Honda motorcycle but have not yet taken the test for my motorcyle license. Will the dealer allow me to proceed with the purchase with out one? I am in California if this makes a difference.

IN TX, you can buy one without a motocyclist endorsement on your license.

Don’t forget to take the MSF class if you have not done so already. rotus

You can purchase and ride on a permit. You can’t use the freeway, carry a passenger or ride at night until you get a license. Wounded Duck

Yeh you can buy it. But like the other answerer said how are you going to get it home? Also if you haven’t driven a bike before you should not buy a new one. The odds that you are going to drop it and therefore reduce the value of the bike is very high. You should get a used one that you can plan on keeping a couple seasons to get the bumps out of your driving skills then go and spend alot of money on a nice new bike. Daniel A

Yes you can purchase without a license. I am not aware of any state that requires a license to purchase a vehicle, although some states have a insurance requirement at time of purchase. All states require a license or endorsement to operate a motor driven cycle. Personally I be live there should be a law that prohibits purchase without license or safety course. I also feel their should be a requirement limiting the type of bike purchased based on the operators experience. Dealerships are not interested if you have a license all they are interested in is a sale they want your money. To me dealerships should be required to accept responsibility for what they sell a person to drive (this goes for any type vehicle sold)(individuals selling their vehicles too should accept the same responsibility) I have seen far to many kids and inexperienced young adults injured or killed on bikes that were way to powerful for their experience. Please be careful in what you choose to purchase. damnitisme60

you can purchase it you just won’t be able to ride it home they might trailer it to your house for you ,take the written test for motorcycles and get your permit then take the motorcycle safety course it costs $235.00 in California at least that’s what it cost last yr, if you haven’t renewed your drivers license within the last year you will have to take a general written test as well as the written test for motorcycles to get the permit dreynolds699

The dealer doesn’t care if you do or don’t have a license, so yes, you can buy one.
I got my permit before I bought one and informed my insurance company of the purchase. Ginger H
