Does a dirtbike or motorcycle work after you have submerged it in water?

If you drive a dirtbike or motorcycle or even a car into a lake or pool and you pull it out and let it drip dry, will it work afterwards? Be specific on each vehicle in question please. If not what would you have to do in order to fix it?

    depends if you sunk it you would most likely destroy the electrics on it so it might not start on that sense i remember an old trail bike trick that was if you sunk your bike you would turn off the fuel tip it upside down unscrew the spark plug and kick it over a few times so it removes all the water from your engine but i would not suggest submerging a bike in water just for the sake of it as it will do some sort of damage to it you could get water in the crank and this could end up rusting your crank or you might not get all of it out of your bore and if left sitting for a while it may rust your bore etc..

    It depends if it was running or not , if it was running then the motor will probably have to be disassembled and re-oiled, otherwise it most probably will after some drying time.

    I wouldn’t try it. I would say the cylinder would be flooded with water, the packing in the muffler would be ruined, the electrics would be messed up. Lots of stuff would be corroded and rusty after. Don’t do it.

    The answer to your question is yes. I have been riding for years and have submerged many. The latest was my 750 brute force. As long as the thing shut off without bending the rod it is runnable. Just remove the spark plug, dry and clean the air filter, change the oil and make sure there is no water in the fuel. Best practice is to drain the tank and refill. turn it over several times to clear any water from the cylinder. Turn the petcock off, stand the bike up on it’s back end to drain the exhaust two times, put it back down on both wheels, open the petcock to the fuel tank, open the drain screw on the bottom of the carburetor and run enough fuel out to clear any water that may be present and snug the drain closed, Install a new spark plug and give it a shot. Should run ok. Don’t worry about the electrical stuff. All that usually survives without any issues. If you have any more questions feel free to email me and I’ll try to help. By the way this should be done fairly soon after the drowning to prevent rust and corrosion on the internal parts.
