is it realistic to have a motorcycle as my only vehicle?
I’m 19, planning to move out on my own to Tampa, Florida
all other reality aside, housing and income etc.
is it possible to have a motorcycle as your only vehicle? or is it just not practical at all
What about dating? how much harder is it to ride with a passenger on the back
ever go to pickup a date on a bike and they refuse to ride on the bike?

weather aside, it’s really difficult to go grocery shopping, or to move anything that won’t fit in a backpack. forget about taking a pet anywhere, or picking up stuff like dry cleaning. flowers get demolished at that high of a wind speed as well. so i’d say no, unless you want to be one of those people that push the shopping cart all the way home from the store. steinmann81
If you have a maxi scooter you can get heaps of stuff under the seat, and you can get topboxes for them too, and then you have your backpack as well. In developing/Third World countries and in southeast Asia, one motorcycle is usually the family transport. So, anything is possible, but whether it’s practical, well, that’s up to you to decide. Motorcycles are great toys but lousy 1st line transport.
Blistering heat and pouring rain, severe winds and 4 trips to the market for $20 worth of groceries make the case for a car.
Carrying an experienced passenger is easy but inexperience is a nightmare and just getting to your date with an extra helmet is difficult and a lot of girls don’t like helmet head hair. Dan W
It’s not easy but ought to be doable in a warm-weather town like Tampa. There are guys in Northern cities like Minneapolis and NYC who do it. In new York, of course, you can fall back on public transportation. The Twin Cities are spread out without a comprehensive transit system, so it helps if you can live close to where you work.
If you know how to load your bike, you can go grocery shopping, but you are going to need help running to the lumber yard for 4×8s. Buster Brown

Absolutely! Especially in Florida. Rain is not a problem, that is what a rain suit is for.
Shopping is not a problem. I have a little Suzuki Savage with a pair of 18 quart / 20 pound capacity locking panniers (hard saddlebags.) Either bag can carry a 10 pound sack of potatoes, or two gallon jugs of milk, or a five liter box of wine. For bigger shopping trips I have a crate that sits on the pillion and bolts to the sissy bar — it will handle a 21+ pound whole ham. On runs to Lowes I’ve returned with 10 foot long sections of 1/2″ rigid conduit (AKA Iron Water Pipe!) Flowers ride just fine tucked in behind the windshield. As for pets, a carrier crate on the pillion or just let the big girl ride like Lady Harley with Jeremiah: ( I have to write to the LeatherLyke people of spare tops for my saddlebags so I can cut holes for my Jack Russells to poke their heads out of. )
Passengers are not a problem. In ‘64, at 18, I was carrying my sister on the back of a Honda Sport 50. Passengers are to plaster their body to yours, rise when you rise, lean when you lean, feet to stay on the pegs at all times.
If a “date” refuses to ride then count yourself lucky — she was not worthy. Dimo J
I’ve never had a date refuse to get on a bike. I’ve had one or two come find me at my hang-out and ask for a ride (not that I’ve ever been a big-time ladies’ man).
Women who ride on motorcycles, in my limited experience, are more adventurous and fun. If they won’t ride, they are probably not worth fooling with. bluff mike
